TYLin provided structural engineering services for a new affordable senior housing development in Crotona Park East.
Amenities of this new 85,000-square-foot building include a fitness center, a second-story rear garden, a 3,600 sf community facility, and a 2,500 sf landscaped terrace with views of the Manhattan skyline. The 10-story building contains 114 permanently affordable studios and one-bedroom units.
The structure consists of pre-cast concrete planks supported on CMU bearing and lateral shear walls. Large steel transfer beams and columns allow for an open lobby and glazing at street level. Optimal placement of steel columns at the ground level required careful design and coordination with the architect. TYLin addressed the site’s significant slope with tall reinforced concrete retaining walls. Proximity to elevated subway tracks required transit agency coordination.
