Deaver Road Water Transmission Main Extension

Greeley and Hansen, A TYLin Company, studied and designed a critical water main extension for a growing community in Indiana.

The current water service area for Columbus City Utilities (CCU) consists of two different pressure zones because of varying grade elevations and it is generally divided by Interstate-65 (I-65). In addition, CCU operates two water treatment plants which are both located on the eastern side of I-65. CCU originally was limited to two major water mains that provided connectively of the water distribution system on both sides of I-65.

The crossings are multiple decades old, undersized for current and future needs, and were identified as hydraulic bottlenecks from a pressure and supply standpoint for the growing western portion of CCU’s service area. The transmission main extension provides a direct connection between two major water mains on both sides of I-65, improves the redundancy and capacity for providing water to the western side of their service area.

Project Highlights:

  • Alignment study and design of 20-inch, 2,500 linear feet of water transmission main
  • Development of connection details including the use of insertion valves and hot tapping as necessary for constructability
  • Permitting management including for the interstate crossing
  • Constructability reviews from the onset of design
