TYLin provided preliminary engineering and owner’s representative services for improvements to the I-395/I-95/SR-836 corridor in downtown Miami, Florida.

The I-395 Miami Design-Build Project is a USD 800 million design-build-finance reconstruction project and a cooperative effort between the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) and the Miami-Dade Expressway Authority (MDX). The project will improve traffic flow and transportation safety while enhancing connectivity to downtown Miami, I-95, and the Port of Miami Tunnel.

The project limits are along SR-836 from NW 17th Avenue through the Midtown Interchange and along I-395 to the MacArthur Causeway. The signature element is a new landmark arch bridge spanning US-1/Biscayne Boulevard and transforming the Miami skyline.

TYLin was tasked with developing a program to meet the needs of the many diverse Miami-Dade County stakeholders. Several signature bridge concepts were delivered and based on extensive community outreach regarding aesthetic requirements and a corresponding streetscape urban design.

TYLin provided the preliminary design for the signature bridge, all approach structures, and bridge widenings at the interchange. Our work includes managing the Request for Proposal development, overseeing the design review, supporting FDOT during procurement, participating in the Technical Proposal review process, and providing technical oversight and post-design construction services for both FDOT and MDX.

The project also includes roadway, drainage, and utility design, as well as geotechnical engineering, environmental permitting, and a complex maintenance of traffic scheme to minimize disruptions to the traveling public.

Project Highlights:

  • The design of the signature bridge and adjoining structures allow the areas underneath to become vibrant community spaces.
  • Enhancements to SR 836 include a second-level viaduct to provide drivers with a direct connection to the MacArthur Causeway that is free of local entry and exit traffic.
  • The existing SR 836 roadway and bridges will serve as a collector-distributor system for entry and exit, reducing weaving movements, increasing safety, and improving traffic operations.
  • The I-95 enhancements include the total replacement of 1,350,000 square feet of concrete pavement, the addition of an auxiliary lane along northbound I-95, and a new connector ramp from southbound I-95 to westbound SR 836.
