TYLin provided construction support and independent deign checks for the construction of the Izmit Bay Crossing Suspension Bridge in Izmit, Turkey.

The Izmit Bay Crossing Suspension Bridge is close to 3 kilometers long with a main span of 1,550 meters. Located in one of the world’s most active seismic zones, the bridge links the north and south sides of Izmit Bay in the Sea of Marmara, significantly reducing travel distance around the Bay.

In support of the contractor, TYLin completed an independent check analyzing and reviewing the temporary works associated with the bridge erection method. Work included the independent construction analysis of the tower erection, tower tieback, cable erection, and deck segment erection with temporary connections and staged permanent connections.

TYLin also independently checked the designs for the erection of towers and cables, temporary work platforms, temporary bents at the towers and cable piers, temporary support of the deviation saddles, and supports for the tower erection crane, temporary hangers, and the cable erection catwalk.

The suspended deck is a 30.1-meter-wide and 4.75-meter-deep single stream-lined orthotropic deck box girder carrying a dual three-lane carriageway with a 2.8-meter inspection walkway attached to both edges.

Project Highlights:

  • The structure spans the Izmit Bay 64 meters above sea level.
  • The suspended deck is 2,682 meters long from one end on the side span pier to the other side span pier and supported transversely only at the tower location.
  • The bridge was constructed with specially developed expansion joints to remain operational in the event of a magnitude 8 earthquake.
