TYLin provided structural engineering services for a new 52,000-square-foot recreation center in the Edenwald neighborhood of the Bronx.

To preserve the sloping site’s mature trees, the program of this facility is split amongst three pavilions that are linked by glazed corridors, allowing visitors to take in the natural surroundings while moving between activities. The new steel-framed building is located near Edenwald Houses and several other NYCHA developments.

The pavilions collectively contain a wellness center, a gym with a regulation-size basketball court, and two swimming pools including one for families. Glulam beams support the long-span ceiling above the larger lap pool. Locker rooms are tucked between the gym and the pools and are accessible from both sides.

A rooftop agricultural garden and a teaching kitchen provide additional community resources. An accessible ramp along the south side of the building leads visitors to a double-height entry lobby and a plaza for outdoor activities.

This project is seeking LEED Gold certification.
