TYLin provided structural engineering services for the renovation of New York Public Library's flagship branch.

Phased efforts to renovate this marble-clad Beaux-Arts landmark were part of a broader Midtown Campus renovation that included the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Library. The second phase enhanced the visitor experience by improving accessibility and circulation and as well as upgrading mechanical systems.

The project introduced new circulation including an elevator shaft, circulation stair that reaches all levels, and a smaller connecting stair. Engineers created more than 30 new openings with the thick unreinforced masonry load-bearing walls including a new accessible entrance through the stone-clad exterior load-bearing wall at 40th Street.

A new public park at the corner of 40th Street and Fifth Avenue spans over a critical switchgear room that remained in operation throughout construction. New rooftop dunnage supports new mechanical units.
