NYU 370 Jay Street
TYLin provided structural engineering services to transform a former municipal building into a LEED Platinum certified academic center.
The NYC Transit’s former Board of Transportation building, originally constructed in 1951, had been left vacant until the city and NYU entered an agreement to transform the structure. The resulting project entailed the selective demolition and renovation of the 14-story building. 370 Jay Street is now part of Brooklyn’s Tech Triangle.
Most of the interior accommodates programs including an interdisciplinary research center and a related incubator. Three floors were analyzed and locally reinforced to support the program of the Clive Davis Institute of Recorded Music, including new double-height acoustically isolated recording spaces. TYLin engineers analyzed the existing structure’s capacity to support supplemental equipment and room framing. The firm was also involved in the design of a new spiral staircase.
The MTA retains space in the basement, which is also the concourse level of the subway station. The site is over four subway lines and houses subway entrances that were also a part of TYLin’s renovation scope.
