TYLin provided structural engineering design services for a new waterfront private residence in Miami Beach, Florida.

This new two-story private residence is located on one of the Venetian Islands, a series of artificial islands spanning Biscayne Bay between Miami and Miami Beach.

An open floor plan, defined by three primary linear elements, provides exceptional waterfront views despite a narrow and wedge-shaped site. The home’s long spans are supported on stucco-finished concrete walls and columns. The curtain walls, including the two stories of floor-to-floor glazing on the facade overlooking the bay, are braced by built-up plate steel posts and steel plates cantilevering from the concrete floors to meet code requirements for hurricane wind loading.

The exterior features an above-ground lap pool with acrylic panels and a rooftop balcony. The narrow pool, which cantilevers 18 feet over the primary entrance, helps to define the house’s primary axis.
