Gansevoort Peninsula Park

TYLin provided structural engineering services for the transformation of a municipal parking lot into a park featuring Manhattan's first public beach.

The project also includes kayak slips, a salt marsh, and a dog run. An open-air canopy, tapered along its perimeter, shades a trio of small enclosed structures containing concessions, maintenance equipment, restrooms, and storage. The cast-in-place concrete canopy is supported on steel-encased concrete columns.

Two of the enclosed structures are new buildings with sedum green roofs. For the third structure, an existing building being incorporated into the new park, TYLin designed some canopy column and rainscreen facade supports based on as-built drawings, retrofitting the structure to meet various project requirements. The firm’s engineers developed solutions to ensure that existing transformers could maintain operations during construction.

The entire peninsula is located within a FEMA flood hazard zone. TYLin determined that, while hydrostatic pressure would have a negligible impact on the perimeter concrete walls, any slabs-on-grade would need to be thicker and more reinforced. TYLin also provided structural design services for new boardwalks and foundations for new site elements including permanent furnishings, lighting, and fencing.
