House Between Forest and Field

TYLin provided structural engineering services for a new private residence in a rural area of the Hudson Valley.

This wood-framed, cedar-clad building provides a second home for a Brooklyn family. The 70-foot-long, 27-foot-deep footprint of the building sits on the boundary between the 13-acre property’s open area and tree line.

The design required a unique structure achieved through conventional means. The framing throughout is either sawn lumber or TJI/LVL wood products. Wood shear walls, including the vertical cores within the house that contain functions such as stairs and a chimney, provide lateral support.
