House on Gin Lane

TYLin provided structural engineering design services for a new private residence on Long Island.

This new 10,000 sf residence is located in one of the Hampton’s many FEMA flood hazard areas. Inspired by local Shingle-style buildings, the home features cedar cladding, an asymmetrical gabled roof, and other classical details including three functioning brick chimneys.

Just inside the main house’s front porch, a spacious entry hall featuring a sculptural staircase helps to organize circulation. A vast master suite occupies about a third of the upper level, with the remaining floor area including bedrooms for children, guests, and staff.

The structure is fairly conventional, using mostly wood framing with some steel beams to support longer spans and the concrete slabs at the home’s fireplaces and masonry chimneys. The entire main building is supported on reinforced concrete grade beams/walls and steel beams spanning to timber piles at the foundation. This project also constructed two accessory structures: a free-standing barn and a pool house.
